"Parking question"
27-Nov-06, 02:41 AM (EDT)
I have a question for any local fans who frequent the restaurants in the area. I had a lovely dinner at the District Chop House on the 500 block of 7th street last Friday while in town for an event.

I was ticketed $100 for parking at a meter across the street from the Chop House since it was during "rush hour". I did not notice any signs to that effect that it was illegal to park there at those hours (4:30 - 6:00). There were many other cars parked there at the time as well.

Does anyone know if a permit is required to park there during those hours - or if you have been in that area, is there any type of sign stating it is illegal to park during these hours? I was totally taken by surprise by this.

Being from out of town it is difficult for me to try to obtain proof that there are no notices to that effect.

Thanks for any help!

The parking over near MCI/Verizon's gotten very tricky since the NHL came back last fall.

Most of the north-south routes around Verizon Center are rush-hour areas, meaning that you can't park there until 6:30 without risking a ticket. I got slapped with one a few years back at 6:29:54, after I left my car at 6:29 with no meter maid in sight.

In addition, a new wrinkle is most of the meters east of 5th Street in that area are now until 9:30 p.m., when they used to expire at 6:30 p.m., meaning if you go to a game, you have to feed the meter during the intermission.

I'd appeal, saying there was no clear sign or marking on that part of the road, and sometimes they'll waive it. They bank on the fact that people are more likely to pay it or have to owe the city money than appeal the fine.

If there's one thing the District is good at, it's writing parking tickets.

Thanks for the info. The ticket and online information says you need proof in order to appeal. (I guess a photo of the parking meter or something) It may be easier just to pay it. I was really irate at first - but I've calmed down a bit. Still it is an outrageous price for a parking fine!
