"PA Caps Fans and Comcast Mid-Atlantic"

With Comcast cable having taken over for Suscom in the York/Hanover area and other parts of Pennsylvania, there is talk about Comcast Sportsnet Mid-Atlantic being replaced with Comcast Sportsnet Philadelphia. Apparently a lot of Flyers and Sixers fans are lobbying for this change. Many of the areas potentially affected are closer to Baltimore/Washington than Philadelphia. If this happens, local fans will not only lose Caps and Wizards games, but also some Terps games and the substanital coverage of other teams like the Orioles, Nationals, Ravens, Redskins, United, and Mystics that CSN Mid-Atlantic provides. I've heard that Comcast right now is trying to guage interest as to which version of CSN is more desired in this region. Obviously, many of the franchises listed above, including the Wizards, are regional-type franchises that could certain use the fan loyalty of people in "border" areas in terms of ticket and merchandise sales in order to thrive and acquire the best players possible. And for many, team loyalty in a lot of sports is determined by what happens to be on their televisions at any given time. I would urge anyone potentially affected to contact Comcast at 1-800-Comcast to register your support for Comcast Mid-Atlantic and also to call Greg Welles, the director of programming and promotions for Comcast in the Hanover, PA area, at 484-288-6556 to do the same. Anyone with any other phone numbers or addresses for Comcast that we could write should please post them. I hear letters are more effective than phone calls in the television industry, but phone numbers are all I have at this point.

I understand where you're coming from, but my perspective on MASN is that it's good for both Orioles and Nationals fans, as well as for general sports fans in the region. Firstly, the general fans now get two local regional sports networks to watch, which means, for example, probably extra Caps games on CSN in October and in April because baseball is on MASN and there is no longer a conflict, and extra Orioles and Nats games on MASN in those same months. Also, the football situation is better in that CSN can expand it's Redskins coverage and MASN can offer expanded Ravens coverage -- more live preseason games of both teams, more shows relating to the teams during the season. Plus, MASN has already announced plans for Georgetown basketball and a lot of local smaller colleges that usually don't get on TV, and CSN could well expand it's local coverage as well with a gap in it's summer programming -- maybe more United and Mystics? Then, specifically when it comes to baseball, Orioles fans in DC and Virginia who wish to remain Orioles fans won't be cut off from their team and potential Nationals fans in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Orioles fans who want to follow the Nats as their #2 team can do so, and Nats fans who want to follow the Orioles as their #2 team can do so. To me, this makes a lot more sense than potential segregating the market to where fans in region can only follow one team, maybe not even the team of their choice. Obviously, the whole thing was handled poorly by both Angelos (the owner of the Orioles) and Comcast, but the outcome is positive for everyone, in my view. Even finanically, the Orioles get their long awaited regional RSN to try to compete with the Yankees and the Red Sox (Well, 2/3 of one anyhow), and the Nationals get guaranteed television rights fees that are in baseball's top ten highest, plus 1/3 of MASN. Also, even for those who didn't favor the deal, what's important now is not what happened back then, which can't be changed at this point, but accessibility of networks for sports fans growing forward. If Comcast drops CSN Mid-Atlantic for CSN Philadelphia, or for nothing, the region will lose some sports fans -- Caps fans specifically, but also Wizards fans and Terps fans and fans of the NFL teams and so forth, and the fans who remain loyal will not be able to watch as many of their teams games. I don't work for Comcast or MASN, obviously, or I wouldn't be doing this. I'm just a fan who's recently found myself in Pennsylvania, probably for the long haul, and I'm worried about a campaign by Philadelphia people potentially limiting my Baltimore/Washington sports options, and the long term health of my favorite teams. Honestly, I'm more a Baltimore fan than anything else, but I understand the region is a package and I think having both RSNs here is important to all the teams in both cities.

If they drop anything here in York it should be Fox Sports Pittsburgh. I'm going suggest that if Comcast feels they need to add CSN Philly, then drop the Pitt station. It would probably even save them money having 2 of their own stations on, instead of paying for a Fox station and we all know that money is what matters to Comcast (not care for their sports fans). Not to mention that I can't stand the Penguins play by play guy (feels the need to throw in corny phrases all the time).I know a few Flyers fans here in York that I can actually have intelligent hockey discussions with (I know, hard to believe), but have yet to meet any Pens fans. Since I'm not only a Caps fan but a hockey fan I'm all for letting fans see their teams (the NHL needs to be as accessible as possible if it's going to survive), provided that it doesn't effect mine, of course. I had the Center Ice package with Suscom and the league actually blacks out the Flyers games here in York. I know most of you say "who cares", but I hate to see fans unable to see their teams no matter who they root for.

See... you already got what you want with MASN... now I can watch two teams baseball teams from Balt/Wash finish a combined 60 games under .500 next year... that's exciting!!!! Then, the Caps will finish out of the playoffs in a league that everybody makes it in. To top it off, we can then watch the Wizards/Bullets... they don't even know what to call themselves let alone how to play ball.

Regardless of how many others want to watch them, the folks here are the ones who do so you're barking up the wrong tree.Honestly, though, I'm of the opinion that everyone on the east coast, heck, around the continent should demand access to every Caps game on TV. No one else has a player to compare to Ovechkin and every hockey fan should be able to see him play every game. On non-Caps game nights, maybe the sports channels can show the lesser lights of the sport from other cities. Pennsylvania should be thanking Comcast for giving them something good to watch, now the kids have a good role model to look up to, something that PA fans have been missing ever since...well, since Mike Schmidt (the second best third baseman in history behind Brooks Robinson) retired. If not for Ovechkin, PA kids will spend all their time hating Russians, riding motorcycles without helmets, whining to the refs, and constantly retiring and un-retiring from their youth leagues. Let's Go Caps! www.washingtonhockey.com

Good... Im glad that you might be losing your precious CSN Mid-atlantic... the Capitals and Wizards draw far less interest in this area than you think and, having been in contact with Greg Welles personally I can tell you that there is more of a lean towards CSN Philly right now. You should really focus on gaining interest in your own city of DC first before you try to convert Pennsylvania over to a team that nobody likes. The Caps can't even sell out their own building in their own town... averaging 6000 short of a sell-out each night. Too long, people in central PA have had to put up with intolerable and lacluster at best sports products from the south and fans of a real sports town with competitive teams are tired of it and want the change.
