"Briere - arbitration"
25-Jul-06, 04:40 PM (EDT)

So the Sabres just lost their arbitration with Briere, big time. Briere was awarded $5 million. This baseball style arbitration is probably going to wreak even more havoc with roster continuity than the salary cap.

So, of course they won't, but, assuming that the Sabres don't give Briere an enormous raise and walk away from the award, should the Caps try to sign him? Sure would look nice centering a top 2 line . . . And he's still relatively young.

Well,I think hes a dandy of a player..would clock up Oatsie like assist number s here, and your right to,hes only a youngster.
However,I think that HUGE price ticket is going to really scupper most teams chances at signing him.,as whoever pays him,is certainly going to have to scupper anothe rregular to make the caps room.

I think his raise was way,way too high..thats more than some of the top forwards in the league earn (I belive, thats higher than Datsyuk,Gabby, and on par with Hossa and Kovalchuk (-GIVE OR\ TAKE A MILLION..LOL)
As good as he is,Im not sure if hes at the same level as the peers that they used to judge his salary.

Would love him here though....

The idea behind the baseball style is to force teams away from going to arbitration.

We still haven't seen the hard salary correction yet. The cap went up too much this off season so the UFA market was still waaaaay overpriced.

I do like that, with the Bradley signing, McPhee has now settled with all arbitration-eligible except Pettinger. Granted, with the Caps last season these are easier cases than with Buffalo's arbitration mess . . .

Good Idea..but every team could use players as skilled as Briere and Gomez. What do the caps have to give up to get players like this? The defense doesnt seem very deep, and obviously the forward lines could use some help. But the only problem is the Caps are lacking some serious trading pieces. Does a package involving semin get a deal done?

Well in the case of Gomez, not a whole bleepin' lot. The Devils are over the cap with Gomez's contract, so they'll have to move somebody.

Question - Given that the Devils appear prepared to accept Gomez's award and sign him (and then trade *somebody* to get under the cap), what's the case with Breire? I thought the team had 48 hours to accept or walk, and Breire's award was announced on Sunday. Did I miss something?

It's 48 hours after the team's last arbitration case. Buffalo has arbitration cases out the wazoo, the last one is scheduled for August 4th.
