Soccer and rugby are closely related. The best guess pegs soccer as a Greco-Roman sport that arrived in England via the Romans (conquering bastards) 200 AD or so. Rugby was invented some 1600 years later, adding use of hands to throw and catch the ball. From this, football was ultimately formed. The London Football Association was formed to protest this. They thus referred to the original game of football as Association Soccer. Then it was referred to as "assoc" and ultimately soccer. Next time a Euro gets elitist about our use of the term soccer, remind them that they're to blame. At some point the Aussies figured out that rugby is 500% more interesting if you don't create big man piles and with the addition of elbowing people in the face ten feet up in the air. Hence Australian Rules Football, which owns rugby. Later on some US guys decided that you should stop and take a rest every minute and that commercials are more fun that actual sport. That's where American Football came from.

Now that you wrote that it does ring a bell. (EDIT: the history of the word soccer) I do take exception to your potshot at the NFL. American football fits in perfectly with the other two major team sports developed in the United States. Whereas hockey fits more with the European originated sports. Football and baseball are based on numerous individual battles that lead to the winner of the game. Baseball is pitch by pitch and football is play by play. There is heavy involvement during the game by the coaches in conducting and strategizing each individual battle. Basketball is sorta similar if you break it down. While there are fast breaks in basketball, it is basically a half court game and teams trying to win an individual battle each time up the court to score. Conversely, hockey fits in more with soccer and rugby. They are both more flowing back and forth games. While coaches can issue strategies as the game goes on it is less conducive to an individual moment as compared to football and baseball and more on how the game is going to be played in an over arching sense. --------------------------

It's a DVD recorder with a hard drive. I've recorded the games onto the hard drive so that I don't have to waste DVDs and can delete games (like the Atlanta debacles) easier.I can burn a copy of Sunday's game from the hard drive but it would be to a US encoded DVD. ------------------------- Everybody Wang Chung......
