"Halpern is on the ball"
31-Aug-05, 02:11 AM (EDT)
From this morning's Post:

"You get a guy like , he's going to score 25, 30, 35 goals," Halpern said. "It will be interesting to see if the game opens up without the red line enabling him to use his speed. I don't know what Bonzai is going to do. He's been a fan favorite for so many years. It would be great for the fans to see him come back."

I can't see Bondra not being worth $1.5-$2 mil to the Caps. Bring him back because the fans love him, and the Caps oh-so-desperately need some fans to be happy about something. Bring him back so they can retire his number the night of his last game. The team isn't going to win much, so his declining production is irrelevant next to his work ethic, mentoring skills, good fan karma, and bond with the region.

Hell, it should be worth quite a bit extra to the Caps just so we don't have to see him umpteen times in a Thrashers, Devils or, God Forbid, Flyers sweater this season. You think Philly got too much support at MCI in the past? Let 'em sign Bondra and the Phonebooth will be their official second home...

Let's Go Caps!

While I agree that the Caps should take Bondra for anything less than $2.5 mill, I think it would be just oh so appropriate if legions of Cap "fans" started rooting for a team like the Flyers simply because they decided to overpay him. It would show the true colors of those people who do.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't remember a mass defection to the Rangers when Mike Gartner became one after leaving Washington.
