Bondra could have had another guaranteed $1mil to play in his backyard and the option to work in the front office when all is said and done. Did Bondra get a serious brain freeze up in Canada?
Or the simple fact that he would only return to Washington for a better deal than he could get from a playoff contender. (not to be confused with a Stanley Cup contender). Look at the evidence. He would have accepted a deal from Washington that would have guaranteed him $4.5 million over two seasons and no trade clause. He accepted $500,000 from Atlanta. Nevermind incentives, we are talking money in the bank. Bondra and Winter tried to force the Caps hand by going public with the negotiations hoping the team would cave into fan pressure and get an outrageous deal. I never thought of Bondra as a jersey retiring kind of player, but he has even lost more in my estimation. Not because he is playing for another team, but the way he and his agent (his hired representative who acts at his behest) handled these negotiations. Classless. --------------------------
